For Mole Day every year, the Prince of Peace Catholic School, in Clinton, Iowa, mixes up big batches of Sugar Scrub. They then host the elementary and middle school students for a mini-Chemistry lesson and hand-washing spa, using the Sugar Scrub they made.
One of the best things Chemistry has ever created is soap, scrubbing germs away and making life healthier. Some years they make up extra scrub to pack in small canning jars as Chrimstas gifts for the Chemistry students to give away.
The Prince of Peace Catholic School shared their Sugar Scrub recipe below:
- ½ cup white or brown sugar
- ½ cup Epsom Salts (MgSO4)
- ¼ cup gentle detergent
- ¼ cup mineral oil
- 1 tsp flavoring or scent (Vanilla extract, Maple extract, Peppermint extract, Lemon oil)
Combine all ingredients. Use about ½ teaspoon to scrub your hands. Scrub over the sink, to avoid slippery crumbs on the floor! Scrub away rough spots and massage oil into hard-working hands. Rinse really well. Then use your favorite hand cream or lotion.
